OVERVIEW
We're kicking off The Bookout, our summer literary series with Marcus Books, right where it belongs: in community, in joy, and in the spirit of liberation. Our second year partnering with Kinfolx for a Juneteenth literary jam.
Live author readings with Meena Harris and Natasha Tripplett, hands-on art-making, a hair braiding workshop, and the kind of storytime that feels like a celebration. Marcus Books will be on site with a curated selection of titles to take home.
FEATURED
Meena Harris is the founder and CEO of Tony Award-winning company Phenomenal Media, a #1 New York Times bestselling children's book author, Broadway producer, or Bay Area local — and this summer, she's coming to Oakland to read with us. Meena has spent her career championing underrepresented voices across media, technology, and social impact, and her children's books carry that same spirit — bold, joyful, and made for the next generation of changemakers.
Natasha Tripplett is a Jamaican Jewish American author based in Northern California who writes from a treehouse perched in a sycamore tree. (Yes, really. And her stories are just as magical as that sounds.) She'll be reading her award-winning Juneteenth Is— a beautiful, culturally rooted celebration of Black freedom, joy, and history.
RECAP
This year’s Juneteenth was unlike any other. Nearly 200 folks spent the morning together reading, freeze dancing, and feeling the presence of a growing community.
