Family Fable Writing Workshop with Duane Horton

Let's read and write fables together!

OVERVIEW

The Bookout heads to West Oakland with writer Duane Horton. He reads fables, then hands the pen over: families write stories of their own, and anyone who wants the mic can read what they made out loud.

Pastries from Highwire Coffee, resources for the whole family from Oakland Public Library, and a West Oakland welcome from Prescott Market. Marcus Books will be on site with a curated selection of titles to take home.

FEATURED

Duane Horton is a Black queer fantasy writer based in the Bay. He writes his own intersection of identity into fantasy, widening the canon so folks who share it can see themselves on the page. He holds an MFA in creative writing from Mills College and is the author of No Hero Alone, with work published across a handful of literary magazines.

RECAP

Four young writers stepped up to the mic and read the fables they had just finished. Give it up for our newest storytellers! A village made this happen. Highwire Coffee donated the pastries, Oakland Public Library came through with resources for the whole family, and Prescott Market hosted us in true West Oakland fashion.
